Citroen C4 Gearbox Problems

when i try to start the car automatic gear lever in neutral press starter button .dash states gearbox problem consult garage and the dash states the car is in manual mode and car will not start

It feels like the gearbox is struggling to get a grip with the gear

Wote start and pops up saying gear box fault and when it does start it wote select gears or go in to reverse
