2004 Ford KA overheating

Car: Ford KA
Year: 2004
Variant: 1.3
Just noticed this after a few shorts trips and hearing the fan going in the engine, plus it seems overly warm and the bonnet/front grill smells hot/oily when I put it in the garage. No temp gauge to be viewed on the dash board in this model, no engine warning lights have come on and the oil is checked. Annual and bi-annual service at a Ford specialist garage undertaken. Full service for 2023 is booked for Thursday. Lots of money spent over the past 3 years to keep it in order, anything needed replaced. My late husband was the car (ka!) enthusiast and would have known what was wrong. I'm not a mechanic but something feels wrong. It drives beautifully (did) but what information do I need to be armed with when I take it for the service? Is it drivable for the 10 miles between me and the garage? Don't want to create severe problems by doing so.

First thing to check would be the coolant level , engine oil level and top up if needed
