2001 Volkswagen Polo smell of petrol

Car: Volkswagen Polo
Year: 2001
Variant: Match 1.4
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I had a diagnostic test on my polo and it threw up a code for the engine temperature sensor, i took it as it was having trouble starting. i had the sensor replaced, but since its been replaced there is a constant smell of petrol, its quite strong as it makes me feel sick when the car is sat still at lights etc.
The engine temperature dial inside the car doesn't work even after replacement.

Take it back to who ever was supposed to have fixed it after diagnosing engine coolant temp sensor as it obviously is not working . If the ECU is not getting correct info from coolant sensor it could cause the engine to run rich , causing this .

I actually fitted the sensor myself using a manual. as i don't trust a single garage around here not to rip me off as im a woman, lol. The one who diagnosed it, charged me £40 for spark plugs and £30 for the sensor. then £50 for the test! they wanted a further £55 to fit it.
The car isn't as economical as it should be, its worse than my 1.6 astra. so i can only assume i have fitted it wrong, or its a dodgy sensor.

Here is a site about the correct temp sensor , explains different colour codes .

You might also want to test / check thermostat in case it is jammed open causing engine to run cold .
