2012 Vauxhall Antara intermittent stuttering, no power then black smoke , normal running at other times

Driving normally its fine but occasionally 4th gear stuttering like an on off power then black smoke and its fine , also acceleration into 3rd hesitation then black smoke and away it goes. Any idea before I throw a lot of money at it . Ps it's just had a full service and went through the mot with no issues apart from a slight oil leak . Thanks in advance, Paul .

One of many causes can be a bad . faulty , blocked EGR valve.

Hi thanks for that Wittingeham , would it normally show a check engine light as I don't have anything on the dash ?

Not necessary , but might be a be a stored fault code that could be retrieved by carrying out a diagnostic scan . Changing fuel filter often cures a multitude of sins also , especially if not been done for a while ,

It's just had the 2 fuel filters done on the service and tbh they were looking well.overdue so probably not them ; but its a good idea to put a scanner on and see if anything is there , thanks Paul.
