Sounds like gear linkage / selector fault . Could check this , might help

Thanks for replying - this would appear to be very helpful - I was basically doing a three point turn - and after the reverse manoeuvre when I went to go into first gear it was like hitting a steel wall - I couldn't find any gear except 5th for some reason so thankfully I was only 3 miles from home so I got back to base - mechanic will look underneath vehicle this week when he puts it on ramps - I pray it's a simplish fix and not a knackered gearbox 🙏🙏

From when you describe ( doing 3 point turn ) if failed , good chance this is what has gone . Fingers crossed
