2007 Peugeot 207 temperature gauge fluctuating

Car: Peugeot 207

Variant: 1.4 petrol

Same problem fluctuations erratic but also drinking up coolant, no visable leaks. It fluctuates between 70 and 90 whilst driving, then suddenly spike. Engine stop light and within seconds drops to below 70. Think it's time to scrap it. I would really like to think it's something easy to get fixed, but doubt it. Note... Female driver not car savvy.

A coolant pressure test should show any external leaks and if nothing showing it may need a block test on cyl. head / gasket . It may be a sticking thermostat , could check . replace or remove to see if that helps .

I've had a pressure test, they've done that can't find a leak. Thanks for your advice.

Worth checking the other suggestions also if coolant test did not show any leaks
