2008 Vauxhall Zafira brake lights stay on on engine start.

Car: Vauxhall Zafira
Year: 2008
Variant: 1.8 petrol
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi,

The brake lights stay on after setting off, hit a few bumps and they go off and then work ok, park up and re-start the engine and the same the lights stay on.

Tried parking without using the hand brake, has no effect.

Been playing around and found that if I turn the ignition off then turn it on again, but just the ignition not starting the engine, the brake lights work, start the engine and hey presto, they stay on???

Anyone have any ideas on what would cause this? thanks

Bob.

Thanks for the peddle / switch comments and I will check this out, but why would the switch perform with engine off and then not perform with the engine running? as I say thanks for taking the time to reply and I'll let you know if the switch is at fault
The wife got pulled over by un-marked police car last night, my fault, she says, for not repairing the ruddy lights, only I've toned it down a bit!!:-(

Ok,

Still have no answer to this, the car as I speak is in the main dealers being looked at, just called to see whats happening and they are "Trying several things, before disconnecting the battery and leaving it sit 24hrs, to re-set something or other"

Sounds like a crock bull statement to me, the cars only done 20K so not to impressed so far....

Hi Bob...Have you found the solution yet to this problem..we have an identical issue with our Zafira 2007 2.2Auto. After a run down the road they go off and work normally. Park up and start up again and they stay on as before! Had everything to bits and in and out,and disconnected the battery, but only for 30 mins not 24hrs can you tell me did this work!!
Cheers

I have also suffered this problem after my car sat idle for three months from October until January. What I have done today is removed the fuse box under the bonnet, removed the modular base underneath it which had became damp and spray it with electrical contact cleaner, I will dry the modular base by placing it in an airing cupboard overnight and put it all back together tomorrow. Hopefully this will solve my problem. I will report back in the future if it doesn't work.
