2006 Vauxhall Zafira ignition issues/ fuel smell

Car: Vauxhall Zafira
Year: 2006
Variant: club 1.6
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Had this car for 5 months, no problems till last week when it began turning into a clown car! 1st time trying to start the car it would be dead, wouldn't turn over, left for 3 minutes, car turns over? Drive a short distance car fine, stop for 2 minutes to pick up my family,go back to car, car dead again? Also smells of oil/petrol in the cabin. Will change the battery but , am more concerned about the smell of fuel or fuel/oil mix in the cabin. Are these problems related? Have read similar problems on this website but any other info' for an engine dunce like me gladly appreciated.

I would check all battery terminals , all earths and wiring / connector at starter motor . Would get battery tested before you replace it as could be o.k . Re fumes ,check engine breather hose and air filter and also cabin pollen filter .
