after having a flat battery i charged it and went to fit it to the car at which point the car tried to start itself without the key in the ignition

Sound,s like your ignition switch is faulty or mechanical side is holding the switch over constantly,this will damage your starter motor as you will not realise that it,s still in the engaged position,I have had this issue before and it turned out to be the mechanical mechanism that was jamming up,Unfortunetly only got to the root of the issue after fitting 2 starter motors and ignition switches,I wired an indication bulb into the ignition feed side which let me know that the switch was still engaged.
