I have the same problem. I let the glow plugs come on and turn the ignition off a few times and this helps.. I am going to change a couple of glow plugs and get a non return valve fitted to the fuel line by the diesel pump.(Approx £30 as I had the same on a Mondeo TD). This will stop any diesel returning all the way back to the pump.

I have been having same problem until i noticed the car would start fine when the glow plug light would come on so took car to garage and got it put on the computer explained to mechanic what was happening he went through all systems till he discovered that water temp sensor was giving reading of minus 18 even tho engine was hot. now dont ask me what system he was using but he entered code into laptop and it came back with common fault cold start and repair kit that includes new gold plated wire conection plug and water temp sensor available from vauxhall part no93174557 conection plug and 90542063 sensor. i too thought it was diesel problems but seems to have cured it on my car you may have to get checked on computer to be sure its same problem think that kit cost about £30 plus the vat hope this cures your problem

sounds like the non return valve has gone inside the pump get a inline non return valve (you can get on ebay cheap ) fit as close to the pump as you can should fix prob . try hand fuel pump a few time before you try to start
