2000 Vauxhall Vectra car revs unstable..engine cuts out when out of gear, acceleration uneven and jolts.

i have a w reg 1.8i 16v ecotec vectra with the following problem. when idling the revs rise and fall, and the car stutters, and sometimes, but not always cuts out. when driving, the car stutters when accelerating/changing gear, and i have to increase my acceleration to accomodate the choking of the engine. sometimes i pull up, and go to reverse and the car cuts out as well...can anyone help??

First - check air flow meter. Then throttle must be clear and the idle motor as well. Also check the EGR valve - sometimes is blocked in open position. Of course spark plugs, HV cables. Also you can try to check what says ECU.
