2001 Vauxhall Vectra crank sensor and other sensors

Car: Vauxhall Vectra
Year: 2001
Variant: manual
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
My wifes car cut out last week and the recovery bloke who tested it said it was the crank sensor (miss fire 1 to 4) I changed that and the next days after same 10 miles trip to work the same thing happened just a few 100yards from the place it broke down! Then i was told to get a Vauxhall one and not a off the shelf one. So i did that and next day after 10 miles the same thing happened again ! After a hour waiting to be picked up she turned the key it started as normal!! Could it be a coil pack problem when it gets hot? If a coil pack is on its way out would it still start and work ok till gets hot?? Pls help us out coz RAC&Green flag are a waist of space and money.

How do i locate the Cam sensor? The more i read on here about sensor problems the more worrying it gets.

Now being told it could be the ECU overheating as the car cuts out only when done 10 miles or so from cold. So i am still none the wiser as to why it starts and runs fine when cold but then cuts out. Crank sensor done cam sensor on the way and told its not the coil pack as car starts ok. HELP !!!!

CAS's can be odd buggers to diagnose,I have one in now that I'm 90% sure that the CAS is going open circuit.
Vehicle starts and runs fine everytime it's in to me,
I hand it back and a few days later it's back.
'scoping it shows nothing wrong, but I cant be sure it's the CAS so cant recomend renewing it!
Situations like this are no fun for the owner, and you do not want to start diagnosing by renewing everythig any bugger on the web suggests,
that road costs lots!
Coil pack faults tend to be miss fire related, under load or when damp.possible but......
I'd be testing the injection pulse width,if it were with me now,and assuming it would cooperate by not starting that is.
I'm looking for a stable pulse width and then it dissapearing, and comming back,
I'm leaning towards the ECU injection output drivers going open,
but it could be anything!

Thanks 1/4drive But i dont even no what CASs are. I have spent all day on line and still no idea whats cutting it out every 10miles or so. All i do no for sure is if i replace everything thats been mentioned i would have a total rebuild on my hands by now. Told coil pack , fuel pump relay, cam sensor,ECU overheating even silly things like its the spark plugs lol. When tested by green flag and RAC and both said its the crank sensor i thought easy fix what a result,,, How wrong was i. Nobody seems to have a definitive answer to fix this problem.... I am not a moron when comes to spanners but this has me stumped.

Rac & green flag are mainly a get you home service and I am sure that they achieved that.As for crank sensor code ,That,s just what the e.c.m. Is seeing as it,s cranking and not firing. If it were a coil pack issue you would think it would show a lack of power or misfire prior to cutting out.The fact that you are able to re-start and drive it once everything has cooled slightly leads me to fuel pump relay as a first port of call,But really you need a good garage with the right diagnostic equipment and that,s probably going to be a main dealer.

Thanks for the reply"s guys, Had someone with more idea then me look into the P0230 code and been told itIs the ECU overheating and shutting down the fuel. I wish it was just a simple thing like a relay but things like that just don"t seem to happen with us and cars,, So anyone out there no where to get it repaired at low cost We are all ears,, Thanks Paul&Lisa. PS,,, Why Vauxhall in there infinate wisdom decided bolt such a sensetive bit of kit like a ECU to the engine block is beyond me.. But maybe thats just me and i no nothing about cars apart from engines get very very hot !!

Now that you mention it I had the same issue with a combo diesel van ,which turned out to be a soldered joint inside the edu ,If you search the Internet there are many repairer,s available.hope you have better luck in the future.

As the engine cuts out when temp hits 80 i let the car cool down and took the ECU off and earthed it so the unit did not get hot bolted to the engine block, End result was the car ran at 90 for 30mins smooth as silk till i turned it off.I know nothing about cars so used good old make do and mend biker logic to find out what was going on with her car.. If i took all the bad advice i have been given on a few sites i would be broke and still have no idea what was at fault. So it was worth a punt chaps, , , How stupid will i feel if the ECU has no faults , lashings of humble pie for me i think lol.

Hi again a week on and no problems with the car ECU cost £250 to fix at ECU Testing, So if anyone out there has a problem and Crank, cam , missfire or fuel pump codes come up Try what i did to find out if your ECU is getting too hot before buying any sensors, Saved me splashing out on even more crap i didnt need or want.
