Vauxhall Frontera Alternator Problems

has problem starting,thought it was pump no,then poss drain back of fuel no,new glow plugs,battery good,car whirrs over puffs out smoke(unburnt fuel)wont start,if we put the booster start it starts ok,could it be electrical??

new fan belt tensioner fitted but when ticking over still rattling, belt pulling back, help
