1999 Vauxhall Astra squealing noise from engine

Car: Vauxhall Astra
Year: 1999
Variant: 1.6 Club
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
I took the car to a garage and was told it is either the alternator or the fan belt, but without stripping it down he couldn't tell. The car runs fine, its just the noise. The higher the revs, the less noise, but if the weather is cold or wet its really loud. If it is the fan belt, I was told I could put WD40 on it to stop it, is this true? What would happen if I'm driving and the fan belt or alternator go? Any idea how much this would cost? Thanks for your much needed help!

yes that is true but try not to use to much as you only need a little spraying on the belt to stop it squeeling but all this will come back when the belt drys so either try tensioning the belt or replacing it with a new one as it may have stretched to much hence the loose belt

If spraying the belt stops the noise then you need a new belt fitted, but only do this to rule it out as the problem, do not keep spraying it as any oil contamination will perish the belt and cause it to fail. You may need a new auto tensioner or it's pulley replacing, If spraying does not stop the noise, run the engine with the belt removed, if the noise is still there then you have it investigated properly as it could indicate a more serious problem on the timing belt side.
