If the engine has been warmed up, then I need to stop and turn it off for a short time, it won't start again. It always starts from cold.

A common cause can be a faulty crankshaft sensor , but other possibilities also

Thank you so much for your speedy response! Oh gawd! Just bought the car for my 21 yr old son... The garage replaced the spark plugs no doubt hoping for a cheap quick fix. Along comes wally (moi) and buys it. What is going to be the cost of fixing it? What else could be causing it? Great car otherwise. Thank you for your brain/thinking. It is v much appreciated.

It 's not a big or expensive job to replace . They tend to fail when hot and then o.k after cooling down . Another possible cause could be engine coolant temp sensor faulty and sending the wrong info to the ECU . Also worth checking , cleaning or replacing the MAF sensor if needed . Take it back to them for fixing if recently bought .

Thank you SO much. I bought it near Bristol. Son is at Newcastle uni so I ain't nipping back (300 miles) down south with it. Will find a mechanic up here. Am sad not to be able to just give it to my lad, problem free. It isn't such a great pressie with this difficulty. Such is life. Thank you for your help. I am relieved it won't set me back too much.

I understand perfectly how you feel . Get whoever you pick to work on the car to carry out a diagnostic scan firstly and it may show up any faults and eliminate guessing . Fingers crossed it's something minor
