Seat Ibiza Head Gasket Problems

when my heater is on hot air n is going full blast my car doesnt seem to overheat but wen my heater is turned off my car overheats dramatically what could this be?

ive been told the head gaskets gone on a car i may buy, it starts and runs with a bit of smoke am i right in saying if the head was gone or warped it would not move atall
