2001 Rover 45 intermitantly engine reving

Intermitantly the engine keeps reving and runs on when switched off.

Could try cleaning the idle control valve and throttle body , probably sticking intermittently .

Seems like sound advice already given ,only thing to add is are there any fault codes logged that could guide diagnostic,s.?
