2004 Peugeot 407 timing belt or chain

Car: Peugeot 407
Year: 2004
Variant: 2.0 S Hdi
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
Can anyone confirm if the peugeot 407 Hdi saloon 54 plate comes with a timing belt or a chain? I was told when i bought the car that it was a chain? The car is approaching 100K and I thought i get a dealer to reconfirm. They said that they have two options comming up against my reg, belt and chain and not sure until they check. As you can apprecaite they dont check for free ££££. Any advice would be appreciated.

From Peugeot forum

Re: 407 2.0 HDI 05 Plate Cam Belt Change

" There is a pdf file on the official Peugeot site which states :- Cambelt for 407 2ltr needs changing at 180,000 kms - about 111,000 miles or 9 years whichever comes first. "
Hope this helps.

thanks again for your response and advice.

Do the Vin suffix's that I provided not give any clues?

The resaon I am still doubtfull is becuase the dealership did say that it has two options which leads me to believe that some 407 were fitted with a chain and some without. Although one dealership in the parts section said that its got both chain and belt fitted which I thought did not make any sence.

Not really familar with that car but apparently there is a chain fitted on the balancer shaft .Maybe that is what they refer to . You should be able to tell by looking at engine if it's a belt i.e usually removable belt covers rather than chain enclosed in engine casing .

it has a chain that runs between the two camshafts. the exhaust camshaft drives the inlet camshaft. It should be fitted with a cambelt. I hope this helps

Thank you both for responding. Since my last posted question I submitted a query with Peugeot customer care direct. They got their tech guru to advise. He confirmed the following:

"The engine type fitted to the vehicle is a DW10BTED4 16V 136 diesel engine. This means that the engine is belt driven from the cam to the crank, but chain driven from the cam to cam".

The above basically ties up with the solutions and suggestions received from you both.

I will now look for a competitive garage to carry out the belt kit replacement. Peugeot have quoted £475.

Thanks again.

Regards
Najo

Glad to help . You would probably find a good independant garage a lot cheaper .
