ABS & ESP

2004 Peugeot 407 1.6HDI sw

Two weeks ago I got the L/H front and R/H rear abs sensors replaced on my 407 at a cost of 208E. The Car ran for about 4 days without any warning lights coming on. Now when I start the Car I get a warning message on the centre console that the ABS / ESP is faulty. This message goes from the console immediately and the associated warning lights on the Dash come on. The Dash warning ights for ABS & ESP go out with the Seat belt warning light as soon as you move away. Within a mile you hear the alarm and the message re the ABS / ESP comes up on the centre console and the associated warning lights on the Dash come on. Back to the Peugeot dealer and his machine says there is an intermittent fault in the L/H front wheel speed sensor. The Dealer has swopped out the L/H front ABS sensor but this makes no difference. The Dealer now says we need to change the L/H front Wheel Bearing as the ABS Sensor gets a read from this.

Has anybody any ideas about how to cure this problem without resorting to changing the L/H front Wheel Bearing at a further cost of 260E. There is no other sign of any kind that the L/H front wheel bearing is in trouble.

Any suggestiond would be appreciated. This is my first Peugeot and it will certainly turn me off of them.

I have the Car booked for its NCT on Tue Mar 15th and it will be failed if the ABS / ESP wawrning lights are on.

I'm not sure if this the correct info or not but I have heard that if the abs ring is removable and get places back on the wrong way round it will sometimes give a faulse reading. Worth checking first!!!

It now seems that there is a small piece of metal missing from the Wheel bearing (probably caused by a stone) and the lack of this continuity of metal is causing the ABS sensor on the L/H front wheel to get inconsistent speed readings which is triggering the fault notification. Apart from that the Bearing is fine. Any suggestions to rectify this without the expense of the wheel bearing.

The ring for the abs is incorporated in the bearing so will need replacing

I have looked at the ABS ring through the ABS Sensor position, rotated the Wheel Bearing and can discern no irregullaraties in it. The ABS is now on continously when I start the Car and until I reach a speed of 20MPH, i.e. if I brake prior to reaching a speed of 20MPH I feel the ABS in the Brake Pedal continously, above 20MPH the Pedal feels normal i.e. no feeling of ABS. I have removed the ABS Sensor / Cleaned off the outside of the Wheel Bearing and ABS Ring - but no improvement. The Car has passed the NCT recently with the ABS fault present. Any point in swopping the ABS Sensors from L > R etc on the front?
