Noisy at start up

2007 Peugeot 407 HDI 2ltr SW Auto
Car: Peugeot 407
Year: 2007
Variant: HDI 2ltr SW Auto
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The car has 84000+ miles on the clock and has been serviced regularly. Various sensors have been replaced and the cam belt was changed at 80000 miles. It now makes an excessive noise on start up after standing overnight. It also sounds as if the engine is "missing". This lasts for about a mile or so of normal driving and then the engine quietens down and the car appears to run almost normally but still a little "loud". The car is in Spain at the moment with a morning temperature of +/- 10 degrees. I need to drive the car back to the UK a total of 1000 miles. A local garage has plugged the car into their diagnostic system but cannot find the fault although they accept that there is one! Any ideas please?

Can you get your garage to do "an injector leakback test"?
This is a test for any injector running differently from the others.
Or if the garage has Peugeot Planet diagnostics they could check for individual injector correction values.
The other possible causes on these engines is an injector seat leaking,
easy to spot as there's all kinds of brown/black crap around the base of the injector where it goes into the head,
also stinks of exhaust fumes under the bonnet when running,
and sometimes you can hear the pssss of escaped gasses.
And my last suspect is the harmonic balancer,
or as you might call it the crank shaft pully,
steel/rubber bonded construction and the do wear out and fail.
Not good if they do.
Hope you make it back,
