2004 Peugeot 206 temp sender on red

the temp gauge on my peugeot 206 goes into red everytime i put the ignition on, before it didnt it would overheat and the fan wouldnt come on. as a mechanic i removed the temp sender plug and gave it earth but i think i might have shorted it on the positive post on battery, is there a fix for this and what damage have i done?

defo a fuse somewhere popped
