2000 Peugeot 206 engine running but wont move forward or reverse

Hi, i had my engine running and car was in drive, i went to pull forward and the car reveved but didnt move, i tried reverse and the same again, after a few times she decided to move forward, i have the mechanic looking at her and the same thing has been happening especially when stopped at traffic lights.
im wondering if this could be the automatic transmission fluid which is what he is envestigating afetr having to get a special tool to look or am i looking at something more serious, any advice or help would be great.

Sorry i should have said that i had just driven her home from work 15 miles away and had no problems, and i hadnt turned off the engine, i was just parking her and tried to go forward a bit more
