2000 Peugeot 206 speedo issues

Car: Peugeot 206
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.4 LX
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Hi there, I have a peugeot 206 1.4 LX and the speedo is playing up. When the car is stationary it reads 70mph and then goes up from there when driving, so when on the motorway it registers my speed as off the clock!!!! Any ideas what the problem is and cost to put it right?

where abouts is the speed sensor on the gearbox? anybody got any photos my speedo has got a mind of its own at the minute and im preety sure this is the problem
It's where the right-hand drive shaft enters the transmission, on the top. Quite awkward to get to unless the car is on a ramp or jacked up and supported quite high on axle stands. There is a size 35 torx (IIRC) bolt that holds it in place, it should just pull up & out once the bolt is removed. In the hole is a small pinion drive (red plastic gear with a silver shaft) which is turned by the driven pinion on the driveshaft inside the transmission.
The speed sensor costs about 40 quid from Peugeot - I replaced one recently
