2000 Peugeot 206 key/electonics playing up

Car: Peugeot 206

I have a yr 2000 Peugeot 206 Automatic
Almost a year ago I had the same problem I put the key in the ignition and nothing!
I called out the RAC he said it could be the electronic key
He ran a few tests ran and a report off - which showed up 3 faults. I went to
Blacklers garage (peugeot dealers to enquire about a new key - they said theyd have to
have it in the garage for the electronic side of it and costs would be over 100.00) I
didnt have the cash as my car was due MOT so didnt bother I took the car to my garage in September for MOT and they did the faults the RAC had
found and replaced the parts and also replaced the battery as they said it was
getting old and could be aiding problems. All that will be a year in September ago.
This last couple of weeks Ive noticed when I press my key as I approach it to unlock it nothing happens - it wasnt unlocking the car but after a few presses on the key button it did. Thought no more of it, then last night leaving a friends I pressed the key to unlock the car - nothing - totally dead. put the key in the key lock and used it manually - car started fine and ran fine.
THIS morning! I pressed the key as I apporached the car to go out and it unlocked the car no problem put the key in the ignition, all the lights on the dash ie the battery light ignition light indicators etc all came on but car was dead - would turn over at all ???

I rang the my garage - he kindly came over thinking it was the battery (which is not yet a year old) but I kept saying I feel its the key. he put leads on to his car as he couldnt jump start it becasue its automatic and nothing - still dead. he kept taking the key in and out of the ignition and all of a sudden it started and ticked over nicely. he tried that 3 or four more times and its was fine. but he said I cannot rely on it and may get stranded somewhere !! Can you help please

Key fob battery needing replaced ? Also when not starting , being an automatic , try shifting gear selector in case it is something to do with inhibitor switch .

Thankyou to Whittinghame for your reply.
So do I go to the Peugeot dealers/garage and say I want a new battery in my key or is it possible (as that may be expensive if they have to re-programme all the chips to my electrics etc) sorry dont really know what Im talking about.
Or is it possible to just get another key WITHOUT the battery and electronic side, so I can just use it a manually operated key in the door lock rather than pointing it at the car to electroncially unlock and lock
thanks
p.s. (I AM 'blonde' so dumb questions I know)

It's usually just the lithium batteries that you can get any where i.e Maplins ,Halfords or any diy store etc. Or you could buy from dealers if you wish , they should know what number / type of battery in fob .Either that you will have to open fob up to get battery number.Should be straight forward .This shows you inside fob ,

You shouldn't have to do it , but if needed , here is how you re-programme your key

5. Open the door and hold the Plip key near the Ignition switch, and press the plip button one time.

6. Turn the ignition ON, and wait 10 seconds, then turn ignition OFF.

7. After 5 seconds the Plip should now operate.

CENTRAL DOOR LOCK with DEADLOCKING (2 BUTTON PLIP KEY)

4. Release the large button and the LED will light constantly.

5. Press the large button once and the LED will go out.

6. Open the door and hold the Plip key near the Ignition switch and press the large plip button once.

2. Press the small Black button.

3. Switch the Ignition ON

4. Keep the lock button pressed for 10 seconds.

5. Release lock button , switch ignition OFF and remove key.

NOTE : If PLIPS still do not work, start the vehicle and then turn OFF. Open and close the door, and check PLIP again.

Hope this helps you .
