2001 Peugeot 206 loss of power

Intermittant loss of power during which the 'diagnostic' light comes on. Been to garage but they are unable to pick up problem on their diagnostic machine -no code came up. Help - I am at my wits end!

if mil light comes on a code will be stored are you sure your garage has the right equip to read ecu memory?

Garage tells me that they have the correct equipment -how do i check this out?
