2002 Peugeot 206 erratic idling

Intermittent problem fortunately/unfortunately. When at a standstill revs suddenly increase (1500 - 2000 ) and fluctuate. Doesn't seem to affect the car when driving but twice recently the revs have dropped off when slowing down to the point where the engine has cut out. I do some routine maintenance myself and know a little about engines but where do I start to investigate what might be causing this please?

clean the throttle then carry out auto adaptive reset
