Auto gearbox problem

2000 Peugeot 206 1.4 auto
Car: Peugeot 206
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.4 auto
Categories: Gearbox & Clutch
If I start the car and don't select drive immediately I have to turn the ignition off and start it again. It recently cut out in traffic and when I restarted the engine it wouldn't go into gear at all, it took 3 attempts to get it into drive. Any ideas ????

I would start with Checking the oil level in auto transmission.

How would I check this

Though I'm all for checking the oil level the fact that it cut out concerns me more.
I'd be scanning both the engine and gearbox for stored fault codes.

Both engine and box are scanned from the OBD Diagnostic socket.
Or DLC as it's known,
it's by the fusebox.
And for accurate results you have to use Peugeot Planet diagnostics,
Peugeots own system.
So it's main dealer,
A well equipped indie or a garage top shelf diagnostics like Bosch KTM,
none of which are going to be cheap.

The car is rarely used and the engine only cuts out when it's cold but is ok when it warms up so I was not worried about that the issue is mainly the gears

Granted but I'd still scan the g/box ecu.

Ok thanks

As an after thought I did have a Peug in a few years ago with a similar autobox fault,
Like yours little used and it turned out to be a very weak battery.
Worth getting it load tested.
