1999 Peugeot 206 gearbox problem ???

Had the car few weeks and all been fine until today I reversed and then was unable to select 1st gear...the gear stick just pinged back out and tried 2nd gear which engaged but still had problems as car stalled continuously....nightmare getting home and tried to over rev to get the car going in second....there was smell of burning rubber and engine stated whirring noise....later on i went to try car again and 1st gear selected fine...what wrong ???
Dont think its clutch as once car got going could select 2nd, 3rd and forth gear fine
any ideas

Has the gear lever gone sloppy? If so then a linkage may have popped off or broken if not then itmay be a fault with first/second synchro hub. Does it crunch if you select reverse?
