2002 Peugeot 206 electrical problems, loud beeping noise and now car won't start

No problems driving the car this morning, no problems with the car at all up till now.
This evening, it only just about started (sounded like the battery was low) but headlights all OK - however dashboard lights were very dim and hazard / autolock buttons wouldn't work. Couldn't play stereo because it had a constant loud beeping noise over the music, whether radio or CD.
Got home and parked, turned off engine. Tried to restart car but it wouldn't even turn over - various beeping and alarm noises and flashing lights all over the place - now the red light is flashing under the hazard button, which has never flashed before (can't find it in the manual) this remains flashing even when engine is off and car is locked.
The electrics seem all over the place. is this water getting into the fusebox or is it something more serious? and what should I try to put it right?

first thing to check would be the earth strap bo;ted to the gearbox if thats ok then check the battery.

I've just had this happen to me yesterday totally out of the blue. I had left my car parked up while at a works away day and when i got back to it it was tough to start it. I also get all the airbag warning lights, beeping on the radio and not able to use hazard lights or auto door locks. Can you let me know / repost what you do to fix this please? I am going to get the alternator / battery checked and also recommendations from above to check earth connections.

Turned out to be the battery in mine.
