2002 Peugeot 206 intermittant noise from air con

Car: Peugeot 206
Year: 2002
Variant: cc
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Hi,
I bought my Peugeot 206 CC 2.0 new in 2002 and has been a super car. No major problems, except that for several months now an intermittant noise has been coming from the air con unit. Sometimes it is very loud and almost whining, sometimes a low hum, sometimes there is no noise at all. If it starts to make the noise and I turn the fan up to max and back down again it usually stops the noise.
On three occasions now it has stopped completely, no air coming out at all even on eco.
I had the gas and a/c filter changed and the garagist said he thought that the noise had come from some leaves in the pipes (?), but the noise continued (I have to stress that it is not all the time). He said he thought it was the fan motor. Does he mean the compressor or the ventilator motor? The noise seems to come from the a/c unit and not the engine. Will it cost a fortune to change one or both of these?
Has anyone else had this problem or any idea what it could be. I don't want to change parts that are not faulty.
Thanks in advance for your help.

If you have to replace the compressor, then this could be expensive. But have a check all round the blower motor, you may find that there is a leaf or some debris flapping around that is making the noise. Also make sure that there is nothing rattling around in the vent ducts...
Hope this helps...
