2005 Peugeot 206 anti pollution fault alert & engine light on dash

On starting the car, the dashboard "beeps" and the engine light comes on, and the display on the top of the dash says "anti pollution fault".
There is no loss of performance and no extra fuel consumption, would just be nice to know if there will be any long term repercussions?

I had this problem a while back. I changed the Lambda sensor sensor which sorted it out.
