2002 Peugeot 206 loud metalic knocking

have got a knocking noise like a ball pane hammer hitting alloy coming from off side of engine does not do it all the time only when start up /rev engine its not a little /big end noise sounds like around cam belt area ..any clues ????

check the ancillary belt tensioner also make sure the bottom pulley is ok.

thanks someone else said might be bottom pully just wanted to ask if anyone had had same ..and how easy/expencive it was ...

I think the pulleys have come down in price. The only problem is removing the bolt. A good impact gun should help. Just get someone to stop and start the engine whilst lookin at the ancillary belt tensioner to make sure this isnt the fault. Make sure you keep hands /loose clothing clear though!
