White smoke from front of engine

2006 Peugeot 206
Car: Peugeot 206

I had just left the house and I smelt a kind of rubber burning smell, I pulled over and noticed white smoke coming out from under the engine. I checked the oil and it did need oil so I got some and put it in. It was still smoking but I drove the short journey home. I could still smell the rubbery burning smell and the whitish smoke was still coming out of the engine.
I have checked on another site and if the smoke is white it may have something to do with the transmission fluid and it may need topping up - how do I do this? and could that be the problem?
Hope someone can help before I have to go to a mechanic as I don't want to be ripped off.
Thank you.

I would be careful that it,s not something electrical thats causing this fault such as fan motor, alternator or starter, just when you describe smell and smoke i would be checking this out before driving any further, see if you can locate the area it,s coming from.

check your coolant level as it sounds like you have a leak somewhere. But going to a mechanic doesnt automatically mean you are going to be ripped off!

Thanks for your responses guys. I have since found out it might be the gasket. When there was no oil in the car it affected the rings in the gasket or the gasket.
I am going to take the car (Homer) to the garage. My next question is roughly how much (ball park) would it cost me to have the rings or the gasket changed?

Cheers

The rubber sealing ring does seperate from the head gasket causing a oil leak from the cylinder head i take it thats whats happening.Should cost ball park five hundred pounds using good manufactured gasket kit.
