2001 Peugeot 206 loss of power

When I pull away in first gear and go to quite a high rev the car will cut out, this has only happened once but the car has lost power and does generally feel like it will conk out at any moment. Also when pulling away ive had total loss of power but the car didn't conk out just went to very low rev and then back.
The car has recently had a full new exhaust system fitted including a new cat, ive had problems with this and recently had it 'fixed'...could this be linked?
Does anyone have any ideas...i'm about to rip my hair out!
