2000 Peugeot 206 whining engine controlled by a/c

Car: Peugeot 206
Year: 2000
Variant: 1.1
Categories: Leaks & Noises
My Peugeot 206 has a noisy engine at best of times. It is worse when A/C isn't switched on.

Within seconds of switching A/C on and turning blower on, the engine whine is greatly reduced.

We are living in Spain so A/C is on most of the summer - now late autumn, if I want a quieter ride, need to use A/C and turn temp setting to a 'neutral' position.

Engine temperature is controlled efficiently by cooling fan, engine oil clean, no loss of water.

Suggestions gratefully received...

Not the alternator that's making noise and quietens down when load from heater / ac switched on ?
