Gearbox noise

1999 Land Rover Freelander 2l diesel
Car: Land Rover Freelander
Year: 1999
Variant: 2l diesel
Categories: Leaks & Noises
Bought a freelander on 29/1/2012, through ebay the advert stated good runner, good cond, good interia, however when I was driving said motor home there was a whining noise as i was going up through the gearbox, wasnt sure what this noise was and called guy up to ask ,he told me the freelander had been re-mapped and the noise was because of this ie the turbo was coming on earlier than normal, but apparently it could be something more serious so im told, any ifo will be most welcome regarding this issue...thankyou..Gary

i suspect that possibly the gearbox could be empty of oil... has it got the propshaft fitted? or could be a air leak from the turbo/intercooler hoses. get your local garage to take a look

More likely to be prop support bearings, remove the prop and try with out, that will illiminate the prop, transfer box is also a favourite, change the oil if it comes out looking metalicy its probably had it, wheel bearings to be considered aswel, gearboxs are not that common to fail
