Fuel gauge not working

2001 Ford KA
Car: Ford KA
Year: 2001
Categories: Electrics, ECU, Warnings & Lights
Iv recently brought a 51 plate KA standard model. The fuel gauge is on half weather the engine is running or not. I put £10 of petrol in and it shot to full and after doing about 5miles it's back on half. Does anyone know what could be causing this?? How much it would cost to fix?? Typical women so it's Defo a garage job. Also mot due soon, would this effect it?? (sorry if that's a silly question :-))

Wont effect the MOT and its probably the sender unit in the tank thats at fault, dont know how much to replace.

not a big job to replace the sender unit but labour charges are steep, you're looking at at least an hours labour plus the cost of the unit
