2001 Ford Galaxy smell when heater is on

Variant: 1.9 diesel

Can drive the car fine and have blower on but no heat and no smell, but the moment heat is asked for horrible smell is blown into passenger compartment. Not to bad now its summer, but will need heat in winter. Any ideas? Is heater matrix readily accessable behind dash, also believe there is 2nd matrix towards the rear. Where is it and can it be accessed easily?

I had a similar thing in an escort and it turned out to be the heater matrix leaking coolant but very slowly, it smelt like curry, had to renew the matrix, could only smell it when heaters were on hot.

If it is the heater matrix then you would be losing coolant.
