2008 Citroen Xsara Picasso poor idle low speed stops

I have a Picasso Xsara for a number of years. It has always been a good tick over hot or cold
a week go started with a fault of poor idle and stopping at lights etc. checked the codes nothing showed changed the spark plugs and the butterfly valve assembly on the inlet from the air filter but no better also resetting the main ecu by disconnecting the battery, No power loss when running just idle speed and rough
been to a garage to use his better code reader no luck at all there is a smell of petrol at times and a bit of smoke out of the back but it is very cold here now 0c any advice?
