1996 Bentley Turbo R with fully charged new battery makes a sluggish attempt to turn over then gives up

Tried to start car after 3 months lay up. Fitted new battery and have checked it is fully charged. Turn on ignition and dashboard display goes through full systems check and returns to start condition. Turn to start, engine turns sluggishly for half a second then stops. The other strange thing is that after turning off and leaving unlocked car locks itself after 15 seconds.

It does sound like your new battery , what voltage is it showing? Wouldn't be the first time with a new battery . Also check battery terminals , possibly a dud / lazy starter pulling battery down which can be checked by testing starter draw
