Volkswagen have just announced a few new engines for the new Passat range. There's the 2.0TDI Evo, the 1.5TSI Evo and the GTE hybrid models.
Both the 2.0TDI Evo and the 1.5 TSI Evo feature a version of active cylinder shutdown technology, this is what the Evo stands for. Essentially this is an engine management feature that allows cylinders to be shutdown whilst the engine is in use, so the engine can run on less cylinders, use less fuel and therefore produce less emissions, it's a win for both the driver and the environment.
The new GTE Passat gets the latest version of the hybrid drivetrain that pushes the electric-only range up to a claimed 43 miles (up from 31 miles). This will make the car a viable option for electric only usage for local journeys. VW are expecting this new GTE version to make up 25% of all new Passat sales, a significant jump from the previous 10%.
