1999 Volvo V70 stall after idle rpm

Car: Volvo V70
Year: 1999
Variant: 2.5 10v
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Car idles happily and consistantly circa 1k rpm.Note Idle control valve renewed at purchase >2 years ago
Car will travel (accelerate at "granny speed") happily to over 3k rpm only if asked politely and reservedly
Has not travelled over 40 MPH since symptoms arose, confident car could reach higher speeds but concerned with potential damage.
The car appears to attempt to stall when accelertor depressed with a reasonable presssure to go from idle to fast moving traffic speed, recovers after "missing a beat"
When revving the car fron idle to over 3 to 3.5 k rpm on the drive in a blip style (back to idle) there is much pink and clatter with no attempt to recover and prolonged stall.
Car can rev to high revs on extreme demand with a dramatic pause (missing a beat) just past idle to full recovery. These high rev test have been tried once only.

I am starting with taking the dizzy and rotor off tommorow for exam as I have had similar on another car. Thinking fuel pump next? Can anyone suggest a quick route to fixing my normally unbreakable daily drive?

Hard to say without listening to symptons but sounds like you could have a air mass meter fault, this is located in the pipe from the air filter box
