1998 Volvo 940 variable tickover and sudden cut out when travelling

Car: Volvo 940
Year: 1998
Variant: estate
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The tick over speed varies from 1,000 rpm to 2,500.
This I can live with but every so often the ignition cuts out completelywhen driving normally.
If left for a few minutes it can be started again, but so far this has happened about 6 times, leaving very laboured steering and little braking. Very dangerous when overtaking or at manoeuvring in traffic or down steep hills - with the lack of braking and very laboured steering.

This has been inspected by several "experts" and a new ignition module was obtained and fitted by "expert". No improvement whatsoever found.

The dash light indicating emissions problems is lit at all times.

You do not mention which engine type ,but let,s look at the basic,s first ,the throttle housing can be removed and cleaned as they are prone to carbon up ,the breather pipes also onto the inlet manifold the flame trap should be removed as this is prone to choking up and the small pipe checked for blockage and the brass screw fitment removed and cleaned out.It would be interesting to know what fault code is being generated,The only other thing is distributor cap and rotor arm and Leeds that give issue.or depending what engine there is a suppression relay that sit,s under the bonnet that can cause loss of ignition spark.
