Engin cut out and wont start

2005 Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI Sport
Car: Volkswagen Passat
Year: 2005
Variant: 2.0 TDI Sport
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
The engine cut out on my VW Passat whilst driving down the road at a reasonable speed, the engine turned over but would not restart.I had the car towed home and re tried to start it after about 4 days and it started straight away. I used the car for a couple of days but the same thing happened for a second time. This time the car will not re start. The engine/exhaust waning lamp and the battery warning lamp are illuminated (although the battery appears to be ok).I have had several people comment on what the problem could be,from fuel pumps, exhaust system, blocked filters, loose sensors.Has anyone experienced this problem before.

when this happened to my friends fiesta tdci it was the fuel filter that was causing the problem.
