1999 Volkswagen Golf rough (sounds like a diesel) when starting until warmed up with puff of white smoke out the exhaust

Car: Volkswagen Golf
Year: 1999
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
Hi,

As described, my car has suddenley started sounding rough when it starts until it is a little warmed up. It is also losing a little fluid from the expansion tank (thankfully an alarm goes off when it drops too low). An elderley driver aka Mr Magoo hit us in the side in November and since then everything is going wrong. It has also just passed the 100K mark. We have always had it serviced, but it does lots of short journeys as I use it for site visits. Plus, we are always running the fuel tank low. Could it just be a dirty carb or something more costly?

Thanks in anticipation...

firstly have you checked the oil level as if this is low then you will get mechanical noise ie sounding like a diesel and if you are running the tank low then there is a chance you may have picked up some dirt but you also mentioned that you are losing water so it could be early signs of the head gasket going but have the car compression checked to eliminate the chances of it being the headgasket and that will put you mind at rest or it could hit you in the wallet if the headgasket has started to go

sounds like an oil change reqired more often and the white smoke fingers crossed condensation from short journeys if not the head is a likely cause after this
