1995 Volkswagen Golf coolant level

i have just completed a 200 mile journey,when i got back there was not water in the expansion tank,the temperature gauge didnt really move on the journey.is it the thermostat thats faulty?

all that can be said at this point is top up the water level and keep a eye on the water level and gauge if you are losing water have it check out by a garage unless you can see where the water is going ie leaking from

i have just had another look,the car runs fine no smoke etc,no visible water leaks,no over heating,no gunk inside oil cap.there was a suggestion that my head gasket had blown,but i dont seem to be getting those symptoms,just the loss of water from expansion tank.

no water leaks !! well its got to be going some were.Get the gasket checked by a garage who do a dye test on the coolant.
