2007 Vauxhall Zafira tapping noise and fuel smell inside car

Wonder if anyone would be kind enough to help me diagnose a problem.
I bought my Vauxhall Zafira last week and on the way home noticed a very slight tapping sound from the engine over the course of the week the slight tapping sound has turned into a louder tapping/squeaking noise and an intermittent smell of fuel inside the car.
I am hoping I haven't been sold a duffer.

Many different causes of tapping from engine .Could be hydraulic tappets / lifters sticking . Sometimes an oil change and filter cures this type of noise , especially if not been done for a while .If it is that , and oil change doesn't cure noise , you can get and try Wynns hydraulic valve lifter additive .The fuel smell you will have to get checked out .Could be exhaust , breather , fuel leak etc.etc .
