2000 Vauxhall Zafira fuel gauge

Car: Vauxhall Zafira
Year: 2000
Categories: Running Rough, Starting & Power Loss
When the missus parks the car with the fuel light on it will not start and needs petrol- even if the light has just come on. When driving and the fuel light comes on it is not a problem and can be run for a good few milkes before refuelling. Is this a Vauxhall thaing as she said had similar things with a Cavalier many years ago?

Any car will carry on running on low fuel but it normally has a certain amount of air coming through with it, this will cause poor starting especially when cold, no car should be run that low on fuel anyway as there is always the risk of premature fuel pump failure
