2001 Vauxhall Zafira engine management light

i travelled 180 miles yesterday(alot of it on M5 southbound with alot of traffic queues)and after 150 miles the engine management light came on which it hasn,t done before.once i reached my destination i turned the engine off and left it cool down until this morning,but when i started up this morning the light came on and stayed on so i didn,t use it.is this a serious problem or could it be expensive to repair.is it ok to drive locally until i take it to a garage

is there any obvious fault with the car such as poor running or cutting out,you really need to get a diagnostic done to check the fault codes,could be something minor or something major,best to get it checked
