2001 Vauxhall Zafira starting problem

My wifes vauxhall zafira 1.8 manual has suffered a starting problem for some months that two different garages have failed to cure. The problem is that, from cold, the car starts first time but runs erratically for a couple of minutes and does not respond to the accelerator. If the accelerator is pressed too soon the revs drop and the engine stalls. The engine management light has been reset several times but comes on again after a few miles. Computer diagnosis does not show any faults. The car has been fully serviced, including lamda sensor change. Once running the engine seems ok but a bit sluggish. One garage now says that it is a head gasket problem, another says that they do not think it is. Any ideas??

Possibly CTS (coolant temperature sensor )?The CTS senses the engine temp and feeds back to the ECU telling it how much fuel is needed .

check your throttle housing and throttle position sensor,have you removed the idle control valve to check it is`nt clogged up?

hi i recently had a problem where it starts from cold and when idling sounds rough then after a couple of minutes it evens itself out then drives good but if you drive it the first couple of mins after startup from cold it struggles to find acceleration and makes you look a novice driver.i had a code eventually come up but not straight away which was p0170 which was fuel trim malfunction bank 1 .i was told it could be a lambda sensor but i didnt want to pay out for a gamble so i read up and the majority of forums came up with coolant temperature esensor of mass air flow . i went for the air flow first which cost me £778.30 plus vat and my mate fitted it for £25 .2 weeks on and it works fine so i just hope nothing else develops . the cheaper option would be the sensor i believe about £15 ish .hope this helps.
